Wu, Who?
After Barack Obama was sworn in as America’s new President back in January, he had to step aside. Just for a bit. Why? Because the spotlight was centered on his wife’s dress worn at the Inaugural Balls.
Do you remember Michelle Obama’s ivory silk-chiffon, one-shoulder gown? Bet you 
did not know that the organza, Swarovski crystal creation was designed by Taipei native, Jason Wu. He beat out A-list designers: Michael Kors, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg. And the cool thing was Wu had no idea Michelle chose his dress, until he watched the TV with his friends while munching on pizza at home.
Thanks to the First Lady, this unknown is now the hottest thread to hit the fashion world. Celebrities have fallen for the New York-based fashion designer’s signature hourglass dresses, with a throwback to Old Hollywood’s Glamour Era.
Wu’s eye for fashion started professionally at around 16. He began as a freelance doll clothing designer for Integrity Toys under “Jason Wu dolls” and “Fashion Royalty” lines.
During his high school senior year in Paris, Wu decided fashion was his calling. He enrolled at Parsons The New School for Design in Manhattan. Also to mention, the young designer studied sculpture in Tokyo.
Wu went from dressing dolls to real life dolls. His early clients included Ivanka Trump and January Jones. From the doll lines earnings, Wu debuted his Ready-to-Wear collection in 2006.
2008, he won the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star award. Wu knew his career path would take him to greater heights? That same year, the First Lady-elect wore a $3,510 Wu dress for a Barbara Walters interview. Of course, the rest is history.
Recently, Wu exhibited his 2010 Spring collection at New York’s Fashion Week.
