AGT Recap: Singers Rule, Everyone Else Good Luck

americaGotTalentLogo_20100829_aatheory

The fifth season of America’s Got Talent started last June and it is already winding down to the last few episodes. This past week on America’s Got Talent was the first round of the semi-finals. It seemed like the auditions went on forever, but the semi-finals are here.

This past Tuesday and Wednesday twelve acts competed to be one of the five acts to pass onto the finals. Among the group of semi-finalists was rock climbing dancers AscenDance and hip-hop duo, Future FunK.

AscenDance

This week AscenDance performed to “Say It Right” by Nelly Furtado on a set resembling the San Francisco skyline. Before the group started their performance and we saw the set they were using, I thought they would be dancing to an instrumental piece that reflected the city. That’s the impression I got, but when the music and the dance began I felt it didn’t match. The judges weren’t impressed by their piece either. I honestly think it was the music that got them.

‘Next Food Network Star’ Winner Aarti Sequeira Dishes Success Story on CNN

_AartiSequeira_AAtheory

Last week, former CNN producer, now the newly crowned Next Food Network Star, Aarti Sequeira went back to her “old stomping grounds” – the CNN studios.  But this time, the bubbly Bombay-born chef was in front of the camera, chatting with her former colleague, Ali Velshi on Your Money about her path from unemployment to finding her true passion – cooking.  And realizing, as she puts it – “There is such a thing as getting paid to do something you love.”

AGT Recap: Wild Cards Get Second Chance

americaGotTalentLogo_20100821_aatheory

Last week was the YouTube special on America’s Got Talent and this week on Tuesday and Wednesday was the Wild Card special. Twelve previously eliminated talent acts were brought back by the judges and given another chance to compete. Four of these wild cards will move onto the ever-expanding list of semi-finalists. (Semi-finals are next week though. Finally!)

Fortunately among these wild cards were two APA dance acts, Kruti Dance Academy and RNG (Rated Next Generation).

The Kruti Dance Academy were eliminated during Vegas week and were brought back by Piers. I was excited to see this group back and I agree with Piers that their elimination was unlucky. I love what these women represent and what they are trying to make known which is that “there is more to Indian dance than just Bollywood.” Though, as much as I love cultural dances, I’m not exactly sure if America agrees with me.

Young Amputee Wow Audiences On China’s Got Talent

Picture 2

Liu Wen is a 23-year-old pianist from China who wowed audiences during his performance on China’s Got Talent. But what makes Liu different from every other gifted pianist is he’s armless and plays with his toes.

The extraordinary musician lost both his arms when “he touched a high-voltage wire during a game of hide-and-seek” when he was just 10-years-old. His dream was to play the piano and when his teacher gave up on him, he said he only had “two options for people like him.”

“One was to abandon all dreams, which would lead to a quick, hopeless death. The other was to struggle without arms to love an outstanding life.”

Liu taught himself to play the piano and performed a flawless rendition of Mariage D’amour for audiences during the show.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience, and Liu advanced to the next round of the competition.

Talk about inspiration.

AGT Recap: YouTube Acts Impress & Get Buzzer-ed

americaGotTalentLogo_20100814_aatheory

Last week the four talent acts from the last batch of twelve contestants from America’s Got Talent Top 48 moved onto the semifinals. These acts were Taylor Matthews, ArcAttack, Prince Poppycock, and Murray. This week’s episode of America’s Got Talent was the YouTube special, where even the guest performers have a history of making it big through the video-sharing site.

Besides the acts that auditioned in person, there were those who submitted their auditions through the show’s official contest YouTube channel. This was the first time that America’s Got Talent has ever allowed online submissions to make it onto the show. It’s an interesting move on their part considering that YouTube has become a sure way for one to either make it or break it in becoming famous.

Twelve talent acts were chosen from the YouTube auditions and let me just say that I’m not entirely sure if this was a smart idea since this episode was the first time that the judges and the viewers ever saw these acts. Even though it was a great opportunity for the online community to participate, but the judges were harsh Tuesday night.

How harsh? Find out after the jump!

People of Perspectives Presents Kim Jong Il, Part 2

SuChin Pak is back with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il in her exclusive 3-part interview. Things take for a dramatic turn from the park in Part 1 to…the bathroom. Yes, the bathroom. As funny as this may sound, they say that the bathroom is actually one of the best places to think. If you can’t bear to witness Kim Jong Il perched on top of the toilet “reflecting” on various things, well, let this be your warning.

Comedian Danny Cho is so funny. Can you imagine anyone else spoof North Korea’s leader as well as he does?

My New Favorite Commercial

Picture 6

I get unusually excited when I see a commercial that tickles my pickle and this Orville Redenbacher Popcorn commercial did just that. I laughed, I cried, and its marketing team should receive a pat on the back because it made me want a whole bag of Orville Popcorn all to myself. I’m sure the cute, Asian bully in the commercial was thinking the exact same thing.

Lesson of the day? Never mess with the redhead kid on crutches. His revenge is saltier than you could ever imagine.

Scottish Korean Starburst Guy Gets Told

scotchkoreanstarburst

The Scottish Korean Starburst guy is back! If you thought he was one of life’s ultimate “contradictions”, wait until you see Starburst’s latest commercial. This time, our heroes encounter the living dead. I personally think the zombie wins in the strange contradiction category. Plus, he’s got some great lines.

I understand that there’s been some mild grumbling here and there over the Scottish Korean guy character because the humor stems from the fact that someone who is both Korean and Scottish is a strange contradiction. I find the concept just plain strange above anything else. What’s your take?

This Is How Korea Eats Pizza

When I’m hungry, I’m hungry and if dancing before eating a slice of pizza with your friends is the “in” thing in Korea, I won’t be visiting anytime soon. I have to admit though, the pizza dance is kind of cute, I feel my booty shaking a bit from side to side.
