D-Pryde: Rapper/Producer at 15

Pants-On-The-Ground-Larry-Platts-and-D-Pryde

Russell Gilbert Llantino is known by his fans as D-Pryde and made a name for himself as a rapper and producer at just 15-years-old. Llantino, born and raised in Canada, is of Spanish and Filipino descent. Setting aside his young age and his ethnicity, what really separates D-Pryde from other artists is his talent. Like a lot of artists these days, D-Pryde posts videos and covers on his official YouTube account. In addition to rapping, D-Pryde also creates comedic shorts on a separate YouTube account.

He recently teamed up with fellow YouTube artist Tamra Davis to cover Drake’s hit song, Fireworks.  Check it out below!

Yoko Ono Goes Absolutely Nuts on the Mic

Picture 15

Ex-wife of the late John Lennon, Yoko Ono, is unique to say the least.

Ono will be treating fans and museum lovers to a “conceptual poem” performance at the MoMA in NYC through November so if you want to hear what she sounds like tribal chanting, experiencing sexual pleasure, or getting possessed, enjoy the following video:

Jizo Entertainment’s AA Documentary

Jizo Entertainment released a documentary entitled “Future Rockstars of America” in 2007. The documentary addresses Asian Americans in the music world and in the entertainment scene. Artists Ken Oak, Nemo, J-Splif, Prohgress, Kevnish and FM are featured in the video where they express their opinions openly. The piece opens up with the meaningful quote, “We’re just doing our shit – we just happen to be Asian. I just think of myself as being in a band and playing music; doing stuff I love.”

The documentary brings up a lot of interesting point of views. Rapper Prohgress expresses his feeling on some AAs not supporting AA entertainers. He says, “This guy didn’t give us a chance because of the color of our skin. Racism exists; I understand that. But when your own people are saying that, we have problems.”

What do you think about the things that were said in this documentary? Do you think what these artists are saying still pertain to 2010 or do you think the AA entertainment world has made progression since 07′?

J.Reyez takes the term “artist” to a whole new level

J.Reyez

J.Reyez is a Korean Canadian rapper with multiple talents. At just 19 years-old, he has gained a huge fan base which reaches an international audience through his Myspace, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook. Besides being an accomplished rapper, J.Reyez is a talented artist in the areas of graphic design, music producing/mixing, directing and editing.  He has produced all of his tracks and he recently directed and edited the music video to his English cover of Taeyang’s Wedding Dress.

In an interview with Hype of Toronto, HOT asked J.Reyez if he ever received any grief about being Asian:

“Nah, even though I get compared to Jin a lot since he’s one of the few Asian artists to break through to the industry but other than that, maybe a few white folks here and there saying I’m trying to be black aha. S’all good though, haters can hate. I don’t see a problem in having musical talent and using it for a certain genre because what difference is it if I made pop music? Since a majority of Caucasian people do pop, I’m trying to be white now? You know what I mean? Aha.”

His most recent music video, which came out a few days after his Wedding Dress MV, is called “This Pain.” The song revolves around J.Reyez’s experience of being put through the political mill of the entertainment industry. Each word of the rap is hard hitting and brutally honest. The music video adds the element of nostalgia, as old black and white footage of J.Reyez pass by in a tailored editing style. These old 2006 images are blended and juxtaposed nicely with scenes of J.Reyes rapping in colored footage.  Check out the music video below!

Korean Pop is Set to Conquer America

It’s a well-known fact that Korean pop–more commonly called Kpop–is no longer restricted to the Korean public! Fans all over the world are keeping track of their favorite idols through online videos, blogs, and forums. Even people who don’t understand the language are falling in love with the music and the image that Kpop artists convey. But the one thing that Kpop artists have not been able to do is break into the western market. Until now.

Time magazine wrote an article on the impact of online communities on the Korean music industry. It features a look into Taeyang’s preparation for his international debut as well as a paragraph on 2NE1’s plans to follow Taeyang’s footsteps. According to the article, Taeyang’s first solo album, Solar, climbed to the second spot on U.S. iTunes’ R&B chart. He is the first Asian person to do so!

There is no doubt that the Kpop online community, which is pretty huge in America, plays a significant role in the spread of Korean music. A big part of it is word of mouth, because if there’s one thing Kpop fans can’t do, it’s keeping their fandom to themselves. I know I wouldn’t have found Kpop if my friends didn’t start fangirl-ing in front of me.

What impact does this have on the Asian-American community? If Korean artists can find overseas success in North America, then so can Asian-American artist. We might see even more AA actors on TV or in movies, and we might also start listening to AA musicians on the radio. Times are a-changin’, y’all!

Seriously, Where Have You All Been?

It’s no secret I’m a fan of Seriously The Band and why they made us wait so long for another Youtube impromptu performance is beyond me and after I write this article, I’ll have a word with them because I’ve been lacking some Seriously in my life all these lonely days. Looks, talent, chemistry, humor, this band has got it all and if AAtheory Records existed, I’d sign these guys up in a jiffy.

It’s worth the 9 minutes and 15 seconds, trust me:

Guess which APA Artist was in Piranha 3D?

piranha2_2010828_aatheory

My boyfriend made me do it, actually I blame it on Rottentomates.com, but ultimately it was my beloved partner who convinced me that Piranha 3D was a good way to spend our Sunday night together. To be honest, I hadn’t even watched the trailer but Rottentomates said it received around 80% in reviews so I was semi-excited to watch how a director could squeeze a film about piranha eating humans into 1 hour and 29 minutes.

piranha_20100829_aatheory

I wasn’t prepared for the amount of nudity, profanity, and goriness this comedy-horror film could do to me in and hour and half but I commend it for preparing me to punch my boyfriend in the arm after it was all done. Though the movie was a flop in my eyes, the movie did one thing that left me smiling-it featured snippets of Far East Movement hits, “Girls on the Dance Floor,” and “Fetish” during one of the beach scenes!

Congrats to the group for making it in a Hollywood film!

Jason Yang & Paul Dateh Do Cute

Picture 1

Talented violinists, Paul Dateh and Jason Yang got together with to Move Media Productions to film and perform a tremendously adorable skit using only their violins to perform their emotions and voices. The amount of cuteness this video holds, couldn’t even compare to a room full of smiling babies. Yes, it’s that fluffy.
