Scott Fujita is Japanese at heart

Scott-Fujita

I know next to nothing about football, but occasionally certain players will catch my eye. New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita has been on my radar because it’s not everyday you see a big, Caucasian man with a Japanese last name. Standing at 6′5″ and weighing in at 250 pounds, Fujita would definitely stand out in any Japanese family photo. Although he isn’t ethnically Japanese, or even Asian for that matter, the linebacker is open when it comes to his family.

Fujita’s adopted Japanese father was born in an internment camp during WWII, and so he was raised within that culture throughout his life. His family observes Japanese holidays, and surprise, surprise, Fujita is often swarmed by Japanese reporters.

“They always want to talk to me, the big white guy with the Japanese name,” Fujita said. “I have no Japanese blood in my body. But I’m Japanese at heart.”

Watch the behind the scenes clip where Fujita talks about himself as he looks through the snack aisle for goodies like mochi ice cream and Pocky.
