When I first read the title of this article, I gasped in horror. But as I started to read the story behind why this adorable two-year old boy was chained to a pole, I nearly teared in sadness.

Chen Chuanliu, an unlicensed rickshaw driver in Beijing, had no choice but to chain and padlock his little boy to a pole while he was out doing work. Chen’s 4-year old daughter was a victim of child abduction, which is prevalent in China.

“My wife cannot take care of him and I have to work to support my family. So I chain him to a pole when I have a fare. I don’t even have a picture of my daughter to use for a missing-person poster. I cannot lose my son as well.” said the father.

Because he is well under the poverty line and a migrant worker, Chuanliu is unable to receive help from the state and unable to put his son in a child care facility during the day. His wife is disabled and collects trash on the side of the road.

Stories like this just make me so sad. I could understand how on-lookers were concerned when they saw a little toddler chained to a pole but the circumstances make complete sense. I probably would’ve done the same.

    This story is so heartbreaking.

Damn, that is messed up. I’ll bet that will be twisted by the mainstream US media to cook up Yellow Peril “news”.

I wish I could send money to them. Do you know any ways I can do that ????

I think, this is the result of indiscriminate sowing of “seeds” by naturally evil or sinful humans.
…….I think adults should not bring children into the world, knowing full well that they will suffer.

Imagine, billions of poor Chinese and Indians, and they are stretching the resources of the Earth to the limit, hastening global warming.
…..A bit like or similar to the problem of stray dogs and stray cats, ie breed like animals.

We don’t find the West having such over-population problems. Why ? … I think, it’s the lack of moral and sexual direction, and common sense.

mmm….. not quite there…. i think you should try and do some research before making a statement….

True population is an issue and these large populations in CHina and India DO lead to deforestation and over consumption of natural resources, BUT the US and other WEST nations are to be blamed as well. The US uses upto 75% of the world’s resources but only contributes to 25% of the population. Americans aren’t living within their means. I think there is a bigger picture you are not seeing. It is the shameful way the US and other nations have shoved corporations such as wal-mart, mcdonald, and Coke into developing nations face that is a problem as well. I study population and comprehensive sex ed, and i lobby for funding for international family planning and I just wanted to say you haven’t quiet got a grasp on the BIG PICTURE.

the kid’s smile just melts my heart!
Such a sad story to read =[
i can really tell that the father loves his kid sooo much, even though the father put the kid in harsh conditions.

When I first saw this picture I was just thinking in my head “This kid is not a dog” but after reading the article, I have to say that, though the father put his son in those harsh circumstances, his actions are pretty understandable. I feel really grateful for what I have now :/ and one more thing.. THE KIDS ANKLES LOOK LIKE THEY’RE CHAFING and I feel so useless because there’s really not much I can do for this family. ):

    This is so sad.

I mean, when you hear a child being chained to a pole, the immediate response is pretty negative towards the parents/guardian(s). Yet, the father chained his son because he cares and loves him.

My heart especially hurts since this man has lost his daughter. If I had already lost one of my children, I would have probably done the same as this man to make sure none of my other children would be kidnapped from me.

situations like this are really common in china (and other places). the poor are getting poorer, while the few who manage to strike it rich only get richer.

but this is seriously heartbreaking. what angers me the most is how chuan liu is unable to get help from the government, a problem that millions of others in china share. there definitely needs to be some sort of effective welfare implemented, considering how many people in china are in poverty.

Such a heartbreaking situation. When I read things like that I begin to think about how damn lucky I was to be born in my country and in my family.

OMG….. i would have done the same to my children if i’m in their situation…god bless them.. :)
